Meta Platforms is set to offer free training for individuals aspiring to work in its data centers. The program guarantees a job in skilled trades upon completion of a five-week course. This initiative, named “America’s Workforce Academy,” will initially launch in Indiana, Louisiana, Ohio, and Texas.

The company has committed $115 million to the program, aimed at addressing a nationwide shortage of fiber technicians, welders, plumbers, electricians, and other skilled tradespeople needed for data center construction. Every graduate will receive a verified, industry-standard credential in high-demand fields such as electrical work, mechanical systems, and plumbing.

The push for more data centers is driven by the need to power artificial intelligence development. The U.S. currently has approximately 4,000 existing data centers with around 3,000 more under construction or announcement. According to a 2025 report from the American Edge Project, a policy advocacy group formed by Meta, these facilities are expected to create 4.7 million temporary jobs in the U.S., along with roughly 700,000 permanent roles for operation and management.

However, rapid data center expansion has faced public opposition due to concerns over local power grid strain, environmental impacts, and economic benefits for communities.
