Military leadership reorganized in Bangladesh shortly after Rahman’s election win

DHAKA – Just days after Tarique Rahman took office as Bangladesh’s new prime minister following a decisive victory for his Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the country’s top military leadership underwent significant reshuffles. The changes underscore the BNP’s dominance, which swept into power with a clear majority, securing 209 seats in February 12 parliamentary elections.

Among these appointments, Major General Mohammad Hafizur Rahman was promoted to the rank of Major General and appointed as the commanding officer of the 55 Infantry Division. He has been directed back home immediately to assume his new responsibilities. Another key appointment came when Lieutenant General Mohammad Moinur Rahman was named Chief of Staff, continuing the BNP’s influence in military circles.

Kazi Rashid Chowdhury, a Major General, was appointed as Director-General of Forces Intelligence. This move is aimed at maintaining a tight grip on information and intelligence networks within the defense apparatus. At the same time, Major General Mohammad Jahangir Alam has been posted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an ambassador, likely reflecting BNP’s strategy for strengthening diplomatic ties.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant General Mir Mushfiqur Rahman was appointed Principal Staff Officer at the Armed Forces Division. His predecessor, Lieutenant General S.M. Qamarul Hassan, has been reassigned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These appointments are seen as a signal of BNP’s continued leadership and control over key military positions.

The reshuffle reflects BNP’s new administration’s strong presence within the defense hierarchy, reinforcing their dominance after securing an overwhelming victory in February 12 elections. Tarique Rahman, who heads the BNP, now holds the prime ministerial office, while the leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has taken on a position as leader of the opposition.
