Across Pakistan, a nation-wide protest movement backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has kicked off in response to allegations of electoral rigging during last month’s general election. Led by party founder Imran Khan, the strikes aim to highlight and demand an end to irregularities that the PTI believes have compromised their public mandate.
Supporters were advised to stay home on Sunday, pray for governmental change and the release of political prisoners including Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. The PTI called for peaceful protests with mobile lights or torches, warning against any form of coercion or violence during the strikes.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where the party currently governs, various forms of protest are taking place. In Peshawar, a march from Hasht Nagri Darwaza to Chowk Yadgar has been organized. Meanwhile, in Bannu, PTI members have initiated a wheel-jam strike with all major business centres closed.
Despite these efforts, the mood was particularly subdued in Hangu, where supporters criticized the absence of their local MPA and MNA. Only a small group gathered at the city’s main square, waving party flags and chanting slogans, but many eventually left, making the protest quieter than anticipated.
In contrast, Haripur experienced a full-scale shutdown with markets, shopping centers, and transport operations effectively halted. Residents faced significant disruptions as traders raised fares on vehicles to capitalize on the situation.
However, in areas like Bara and Upper Orakzai, where displaced people from the Tirah Valley are being relocated, PTI members decided not to stage a strike, allowing businesses and transportation to continue operating normally.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s other regions, such as Bannu, the situation was more aligned with the party’s peaceful protest calls. In these places, markets remained open, and transport continued without significant disruptions.
The PTI has consistently emphasized through social media that its demands are for a completely peaceful protest and have advised citizens to stock essential household goods and emergency supplies like power banks, torches, and extra batteries.
As the weekend draws to a close, the PTI’s call for justice remains resolute, with support from various regions across Pakistan. The party is closely monitoring developments in each area to ensure that their peaceful demand for electoral reforms continues to gain momentum.
