On Wednesday in Jerusalem, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India’s unwavering support for Israel following the Hamas attack that left numerous Palestinian civilians dead. The visit aimed to bolster economic and defense ties has faced some criticism at home.
In his address to the Israeli parliament, Knesset, Modi said, “We carry with us the deepest condolences of our people for every life lost and for each shattered family’s world in the barbaric terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7. We share your grief profoundly; India stands firmly with Israel, not just today but always.”
Despite not explicitly mentioning tens of thousands of Palestinians killed during the two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas, Modi stressed his country’s support for efforts that lead to durable peace and regional stability. He highlighted economic growth in India alongside Israel’s technological leadership as a foundation for their forward-looking partnership.
“Not only do our economies share common growth trajectories,” Modi said, “but there are significant synergies in areas such as quantum technologies, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence.”
This visit marked the second time Prime Minister Modi had visited Israel since assuming office in 2014. Upon disembarking at Ben Gurion Airport, Modi was greeted with a warm hug by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Shosh Bedrosian, spokeswoman for Netanyahu’s office, described their “special and personal relationship” between the two nations. She emphasized that India and Israel were partners in innovation, security, and shared strategic visions.
Earlier, Modi and Netanyahu held a private meeting after the official welcome ceremony, with the Israeli leader praising their “real friendship.” In his X post on the meeting, Modi characterized it as “excellent.”
As these diplomatic efforts continue, observers are closely watching how India’s stance might evolve amidst growing tensions in the region.
