Punjab Grants Legal Status to Crime Scene Units

The Punjab government has formally granted legal status to the Crime Scene System, marking a significant step after years of operation. The cabinet approved rules for Crime Scene Units (CSUs), providing formal legal backing to officers involved in evidence collection at crime scenes.

Previously, CSU officers collected evidence without any legal protection. Under the new rules, the entire process—from gathering evidence to presenting it in court—will be fully regulated.

The regulations also approve the use of video recordings as evidence. Each recording must include details such as FIR number, date, police station, and district. Officers will now have the option to present testimony in court either via video link or in person.

Officials stated that these new regulations will enhance transparency and strengthen the legal framework of the investigative system.
