MQM’s Mustafa Kamal has termed independent power plants (IPPs) a threat to national security.

In a statement, Kamal demanded the immediate removal of the capacity payments clause from IPP agreements, highlighting that billions of rupees are being paid for electricity that is not being generated.

Kamal pointed out that the amount allocated for capacity payments has surpassed the defense budget. He emphasized that while these agreements were signed under various governments, the focus should be on finding a solution rather than placing blame.

Kamal stated that Pakistan cannot sustain these agreements and urged for their review. He expressed that the national economy and development have suffered, making it impossible for people to afford electricity at 60 rupees per unit. He called on the prime minister to discuss the issue with China and acknowledge the mistakes made, stating that Pakistan cannot bear the burden of these agreements.
