Nawaz Sharif Announces Big Electricity Bill Relief for Punjab, Not for Sindh

Nawaz Sharif, President of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) and former Prime Minister, has announced that the Punjab government will provide immediate relief on electricity bills for August and September. Consumers using up to 500 units will receive a reduction of up to Rs 14 per unit.

In a press conference held alongside Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Sharif revealed that the provincial government plans to divert Rs 45 billion from various sectors to offer relief to the public. He also urged Shahbaz Sharif to take steps to reduce electricity prices.

Sharif praised the federal government’s initiative to relieve consumers on 200 units of electricity, describing it as a positive move. He also mentioned that the solar panel scheme would require an investment of PKR 700 billion.

Addressing inflation, Sharif denied any responsibility, pointing out that the issues began during the PTI administration. He questioned the return of the IMF and criticized those who now criticize from jail. Sharif highlighted that his government had successfully completed electricity projects to resolve the crisis and expressed concern for the public suffering due to inflation and high electricity bills.

Sharif recounted how in 2017, electricity bills were lower, and the cost of essentials was more manageable. He noted that under his administration, the dollar was maintained at Rs 104, which was disrupted following his removal. Sharif questioned the motivations behind his ousting and the impact it had on the country’s economic stability.

Reflecting on his tenure, Sharif emphasized the significant progress made in addressing the electricity crisis and criticized those responsible for current economic challenges, including high interest rates and inflation. He urged accountability for those who contributed to the country’s economic difficulties.
