The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has wrapped up its hearing on K-Electric’s proposal to lower electricity tariffs in Karachi by Rs4.95 per unit under the December monthly fuel adjustment. The regulator has reserved its decision, which will be announced after a detailed review of financial data.

During the proceedings, K-Electric also sought an additional adjustment of Rs5 billion, citing costs associated with partial load operations, open-cycle generation, and startup expenses. However, consumer representatives opposed the request, insisting that the full benefit of the fuel adjustment should be passed on to the public.

A consumer highlighted that despite these tariff changes, commercial areas in Karachi continue to experience load shedding, while the Industrial Support Package remains unimplemented. NEPRA officials responded by noting that K-Electric has challenged the package in court.

Company representatives disclosed that in December, K-Electric produced electricity at Rs18.60 per unit from its own sources, while power procured from CPPA cost Rs9.60 per unit.

NEPRA will issue an official notification after finalizing its decision based on the financial review.
