New Zealand declares state of emergency as North Island faces more storms after flooding

New Zealand is bracing for another round of severe weather after intense rains ravaged Otorohanga District earlier this week. The flooding has already caused significant damage, including road collapses, power outages, and the evacuation of several homes. A grim discovery—a man’s body found in a submerged vehicle—highlighted how inundated roads had become.

Meteorologists predict that the current weather system will intensify on Sunday, particularly affecting Wellington and nearby regions. With winds expected to reach up to 120km/h (75mph) and waves reaching seven meters (22 feet), the impact could be even more devastating. The situation escalated rapidly in Otorohanga, with rainfall hitting around 300mm (11.8 inches) within an hour, overwhelming a drainage system designed to prevent flooding.

Otorohanga District Mayor Rodney Dow expressed deep concern for his community. “This is truly devastating news,” he stated. “Our immediate priority must be supporting those affected by the widespread flooding and assisting emergency workers.” Residents are advised to stay indoors until conditions improve, with reports indicating that images captured after floodwaters receded showed debris-covered roadways and submerged areas.

The intensity of this storm has left a clear wake behind it, as evidenced by social media posts showing extensive damage—areas now submerged in water with sections of road collapsed or covered entirely. These images underscore the severity of the situation and serve as a stark reminder of what nature can do when caught off-guard.
