Norwegian police detain son of crown princess over fresh allegations ahead of trial

Police announced on Monday that they have detained Marius Borg Hoiby, 29, the eldest son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit and stepson to Crown Prince Haakon. The arrest comes amid ongoing criminal investigations against him.

In a statement, police revealed that Hoiby was apprehended last Sunday under suspicion of causing bodily harm, wielding a knife, and violating a restraining order. New allegations suggest he may face additional charges following his detention.

Following the latest accusations, Norwegian police indicated they would seek approval from a judge to keep Hoiby in custody for the next four weeks. The detainment follows Hoiby’s previous placement at large while awaiting trial on multiple charges including rape and domestic violence.

Hoiby is facing four counts of rape and several other offenses as part of a series of cases that have rocked Norway’s monarchy. These include domestic violence, assault, and drug possession among others.

He has not admitted guilt for the rape and domestic violence allegations but has acknowledged some lesser crimes previously. His trial, scheduled to begin on Tuesday, is expected to last until March 19th.

The case against Hoiby originated in 2024 when police initially suspected him of physical assault involving a woman he had been with. In his statement at the time, Hoiby admitted causing bodily harm and damaging her apartment while under the influence of cocaine and alcohol, expressing remorse for his actions.
