New York City Mayor Mamdani kicked off the outdoor pool season with a splash, marking a return to an old municipal practice: jumping into the public pool fully clothed. The 34-year-old mayor dove into the water at Thomas Jefferson Pool in East Harlem on its opening day, surrounded by children.
Mamdani’s decision was met with mixed reactions online, where users compared him to tech mogul Jensen Huang often seen in a suit. This event highlighted City Hall traditions amid significant decisions impacting New Yorkers.
Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg initiated this pool jump tradition when he opened the pool, while Bill de Blasio and Eric Adams did not continue it.
