Ben Ogden’s Silver Medal Stands as a Monumental Leap in US Cross-Country Skiing History
In Tesenro, a moment that had been anticipated for decades finally arrived. US cross-country skier Ben Ogden clinched silver at the Olympic Games, breaking through a 50-year medal drought for American men in this discipline.
The last time an American male won an Olympic medal in cross-country skiing was in 1976 when Bill Koch captured silver in the 30 km event. Ogden’s achievement marks a significant milestone not only for the US team but also heralds a promising new era for the sport domestically.

On Tuesday, Ogden delivered a dominant performance. He topped the qualification round with a second-place finish and went into the quarter-finals, where he maintained his lead to secure an additional 2.29 seconds over the next fastest competitor. In the finals, his win was just narrowly edged by Norway’s Johannes Klaebo.
“I looked at that last bend on the hill and saw only three of us remaining,” Ogden said. “That moment felt like a call for action.”
Off the track, 25-year-old Ogden is known for his humor and humility. Ahead of the Games, he quipped about not responding to messages or emails due to his recent hobby—knitting.
Ogden’s historic achievement brought joy and enthusiasm among the US team. Julia Kern, who finished sixth in the women’s classic sprint, described it as “incredibly special.” Jessie Diggins echoed her teammate’s sentiment by posting on Instagram, “This guy!!!! Holy smokes, CONGRATS BENNY SO PROUD OF YOU!!”
