OpenAI announced on Tuesday its decision to discontinue Sora, an AI video app. The move was reported by the Wall Street Journal and comes as user engagement in the platform has dwindled.

According to OpenAI’s spokesperson, “We’ve decided to discontinue Sora in the consumer app and API. As we focus more resources on compute demand grows, the Sora research team continues its work on world simulation research aimed at advancing robotics for real-world tasks.”

OpenAI also thanked users in a social media post, acknowledging that the news might be disappointing.

The AI video apps have been praised for their capability to generate videos almost instantaneously but have faced criticism due to difficulties distinguishing between real and fake images. In 2025, Sora faced controversy when some users created what OpenAI deemed disrespectful depictions of Martin Luther King Jr., leading to a temporary ban on using the civil rights leader’s likeness in app-generated videos.
