Oslo Police Say US Embassy Explosion May Have Been Deliberate Attack

The US Embassy in Oslo has suffered a dramatic early Sunday morning blast, raising questions about whether it was an attack deliberately targeted at diplomatic security amid heightened global tensions. Authorities suggest this incident may be linked to the crisis unfolding in the Middle East, though no suspects have yet been identified. A police investigation is underway, with Norwegian authorities cooperating closely with their US counterparts.

“It’s natural to see such incidents within the context of current security conditions and considering the potential motives for attacking a diplomatic outpost,” stated Frode Larsen, head of Oslo’s investigative unit. “We are exploring both terrorism as well as other possibilities at this stage.”

The explosion occurred shortly after midnight (00:00 GMT) in western Oslo, damaging the entry to the embassy’s consular section and sending thick smoke into the area. Eyewitnesses described seeing a significant amount of damage, including broken glass at the entrance.

Sebastian Toerstad, 18, who was on his way home when he witnessed the event, told Reuters: “I saw there was some kind of explosion and then I noticed heavy black smoke coming from what looked like a hole. There were people running around outside.”

The US State Department responded to reports with assurance that it supports Norwegian authorities in their investigation, while Norway’s Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide emphasized the importance of diplomatic security.

“This is an unacceptable act taken very seriously,” Eide said in a statement. “We recognize our embassy’s importance and value its safety deeply.”
