The body was initially identified as Afghan by local authorities but remained inaccessible due to consultations among the country’s security officials extending beyond the cessation of hostilities scheduled at 5:30 PM.
Local residents had first reported the sighting, which soon gained traction on social media with video and images shared widely. Both nations swiftly sent delegations to the border crossing for an urgent meeting; a white flag signal announced their arrival. The Pakistani delegation was led by senior figures such as Malak Tajuddin and Murad Hussain, while the Afghan side included prominent locals like Haji Madtyaar Shinwari.
Soon after, these delegates met at Zero Point to address the immediate concern of removing the body from a location marred by recent violence. At least five representatives from each country convened for the crucial task. While they identified the deceased as Afghan, tensions arose due to disagreements about who would handle the burial process. The Pakistani delegation, including Mufti Ejaz, pointed out that while the identity was established, consultations with higher authorities on the Afghan side had delayed proceedings.
As time pressures mounted and the agreed deadline neared, representatives from both sides began searching for more deceased individuals in their vicinity. However, efforts were hampered by the urgency of relocating the initially identified body. After concluding their urgent task, Pakistani officials like Shah Khalid reported that cross-border skirmishes resumed as they returned to Landi Kotal.
Despite these setbacks, Mufti Ejaz remained optimistic about potential future developments. He suggested that if Afghan authorities declined to accept the deceased individual, a local burial would be arranged in Landi Kotal—a move aimed at maintaining cordial relations and addressing ongoing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The situation underscores the complexities of border governance under conflict conditions.
This incident is part of Pakistan’s Operation Ghazab lil-Haq, launched in late February after unprovoked Taliban gunfire from across the border. Islamabad has consistently accused Kabul of providing sanctuary to banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) following the Taliban’s rise in Afghanistan in 2021. UN reports have documented the TTP’s presence in eastern Afghanistan despite the Taliban’s denial, highlighting the challenges both countries face amid regional instability.
