Pakistan Captain Salman Hails Usman Tariq as ‘X Factor’ for Twenty20 World Cup Debut

Pakistan captain Salman Agha defended off-spinner Usman Tariq’s unorthodox bowling action on Friday, calling him the side’s “X factor” ahead of their Twenty20 World Cup opener against the Netherlands in Colombo. The 28-year-old Tariq has been reported twice for a suspect bowling style that culminates in pausing near the crease before firing the ball with a side-arm sling-shot action. Despite these reports, Salman Agha stated: “I don’t understand why we are talking about his action because in my opinion it is a fair action.” He added, “He has been tested twice and he has been cleared.”

Agha went on to say, “Yes, he is the X factor of the team. Where we feel that we need an X factor, we will definitely use him.” Having boycotted their Group A contest against India due to political tensions, Pakistan now have a narrow margin for error in their quest to qualify for the Super 8 stage.

The tournament has been overshadowed by the acrimonious build-up, with Bangladesh replaced by Scotland and Pakistan refusing to face co-hosts India. Salman stated, “We will not make mistakes against these second-tier teams like Namibia or the Netherlands.” Agha admitted they have limited experience of the Dutch team but noted that it would be important for them to bring their best game.

The captain emphasized, “It is very, very important to execute our plans effectively. You haven’t played much against these sides and you don’t really know their strength and weakness are.”

Pakistan’s lineup includes explosive opening pair Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub, with Agha targeting number three in the batting order. Babar Azam, a former skipper who has struggled for form, is set to bat at number four.

Agha confirmed that advice from their government would be sought if Pakistan progresses to the knockout phase against India.
