Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain has held talks with Alois Rainer, Germany’s Federal Minister for Agriculture, Food, and Regional Identity, to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the agriculture and livestock sectors.
During the meeting in Germany, both sides emphasised closer collaboration to enhance agricultural productivity, food security, and sustainable rural development. Minister Hussain reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to expanding ties with Germany, describing agriculture and livestock as vital pillars of Pakistan’s economy and a key source of income and food security for millions of rural households.
The two ministers acknowledged Germany’s international standing in agricultural research, innovation, and sustainable farming. Minister Hussain expressed Pakistan’s interest in leveraging German expertise in livestock breeding, animal health, food safety, and climate-smart agriculture. Discussions also covered the use of modern technologies to improve productivity, promote efficient resource use, and address climate-related challenges.
Livestock and dairy development featured prominently in the talks, with a focus on genetic improvement, veterinary services, and strengthening dairy and meat value chains. Both sides also explored opportunities for value addition, post-harvest management, and food processing to enhance the global competitiveness of Pakistani agricultural products.
Capacity building emerged as a key area of cooperation, with agreement on the importance of technical training and vocational education for farmers and agricultural professionals. Minister Hussain appreciated Germany’s ongoing development support and expressed interest in joint programmes and pilot projects targeting smallholders, women, and youth in rural areas.
The ministers also highlighted the role of the private sector and public–private partnerships in advancing agri-business, renewable energy solutions, and climate resilience. Both reaffirmed their shared commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those linked to food security, poverty reduction, and climate adaptation.
Concluding the meeting, Minister Hussain thanked Germany for its continued support, especially in climate resilience and water management, and voiced optimism that enhanced cooperation would deliver tangible benefits for farmers, consumers, and the broader economies of both countries.
