As tensions escalate between Iran and a US-led coalition including Israel, Pakistan is stepping up its naval operations to safeguard its maritime trade lifelines. The Pakistan Navy launched Operation Muhafiz-ul-Bahr in response to potential disruptions in critical sea routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
The move comes at a time when heightened conflict threatens regional security and global shipping, with reports of increased naval activity in the Arabian Sea and Gulf regions. Iran has repeatedly threatened to disrupt traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital energy corridors.
Pakistan’s economy is heavily reliant on sea-based commerce, accounting for nearly 90% of its trade through maritime routes, and a significant portion of oil imports pass through this strategic strait before reaching Pakistani ports. The Pakistan Navy has thus activated escort operations to safeguard national energy supplies and commercial vessels.
In a statement released by the military’s media wing, Pakistan Navy officials declared that the initiative aimed to protect Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs) and ensure the security of essential commodity shipments to the country. They reported that naval ships were already escorting merchant vessels under the Pakistani flag.
“Close coordination with the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC)” is key to these operations, said the statement. So far, two commercial vessels have been escorted by navy ships, one of which is set to arrive in Karachi shortly.
