The caretaker Federal Minister for Railways, Communication & Maritime Affairs, Shahid Ashraf Tarar, inaugurated an IoT-based Fuel Monitoring System at Margalla Station in Islamabad. This initiative marks Pakistan Railways’ transition towards digitalization, aimed at enhancing safety, efficiency, and financial savings.
The Ministry of Railways has prioritized equipping locomotives with state-of-the-art gadgets for online monitoring, focusing on both financial optimization and operational safety measures. The newly implemented IT-based system is expected to yield approximately 15% savings in fuel expenditure while improving operational efficiency and targeted maintenance protocols. Furthermore, it aims to curb financial resource wastage and mitigate pilferage within the railway system.
A centralized dashboard is under development to consolidate all pertinent information, providing users with instant access to crucial data. The system offers real-time monitoring capabilities, including fuel consumption and refueling status, average speed, idle time, real-time location tracking, and maintenance requirements. Additionally, it enables analysis of the driver’s behavior, contributing to enhanced safety measures.
Of notable importance is the system’s ability to detect abnormal fluctuations in fuel consumption patterns, indicated by a red pop-up on the dashboard. Automatic detailed analysis of data will facilitate informed decision-making processes, ensuring timely interventions and optimizations.
