PBC Opposes Government’s Constitutional Amendments

The Pakistan Bar Council has raised concerns over the government’s proposed constitutional amendments, strongly condemning the move in a joint statement by six of its members, including Mehmood Chohan, Abid Shahid Zuberi, Ishtiaq A. Khan, Shahab Sarki, Tahir Faraz, and Munir Kakar. The council believes the amendments pose a direct threat to the independence of the judiciary.

The members warned that the changes aim to undermine the rule of law and the constitution by establishing a parallel judicial system. “This is unacceptable,” they stated, urging the legal community—both judges and lawyers—to unite against the government’s actions.

Renowned legal expert Abid Zuberi also voiced his concerns, stating that the proposed amendments could erode judicial independence. He pointed out that the creation of two courts would lead to the appointment of two chief justices in Pakistan, further complicating the judicial structure.
