PM Shehbaz Commends Press Freedom on World Press Day

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed his government’s commitment to safeguarding press freedom in a message on World Press Freedom Day observed on May 3. He expressed sincere appreciation to journalists for their selfless services, stating that conscientious professionalism by media practitioners is essential for fostering an informed and enlightened society.

Sharif emphasized the importance of timely dissemination of accurate, impartial, and unbiased information as the cornerstone of credible journalism. He urged journalists to uphold professional ethics, counter propaganda and fake news, and effectively discourage the spread of unverified information. The Prime Minister highlighted that this year’s World Press Freedom Day theme, ‘Shaping a Peaceful Future,’ reflects the callings of our time.

He noted that peace is achieved not only through diplomacy but also through credible information, responsible journalism, and informed public discourse. The media holds immense potential to promote constructive engagement and strengthen diplomatic, economic, and social ties among nations. Accurate representation of perspectives can help resolve complex issues, standing as a hallmark of responsible journalism.

Pakistan prioritizes dialogue and negotiation in addressing differences or resolving conflicts. Sharif acknowledged the positive role Pakistan plays in promoting de-escalation, dialogue, and stability norms globally. He also highlighted commendable responsibility demonstrated by national media during critical conflict moments, including Marka-e-Haq and Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos.

During these crucial moments in national history, the media contributed to a coordinated national response, reinforced unity, and presented Pakistan’s position with clarity and accuracy while countering misinformation effectively. These moments reflected not only the capabilities of our armed forces but also the strength of national cohesion, where responsible media played a vital role.

Sharif paid tribute to journalists who laid their lives in the line of duty, reminding that press freedom is precious and invaluable. He emphasized the evolving nature of the media landscape with technological advancements, urging media institutions to adapt to digital transformation while upholding verification, integrity, and professionalism.

The Prime Minister underscored that responsible journalism reflects our social, political, and economic diversity and plays a vital role in promoting national unity and stability. Journalism serves as a powerful tool for highlighting public issues of social and economic importance and enhancing public awareness.
