Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the formulation of a comprehensive National Agriculture Policy in consultation with provinces as part of government restructuring efforts.
At a review meeting in Islamabad, PM Shehbaz also directed the establishment of an apex forum for agriculture to monitor monthly meetings on the Agriculture Innovation and Growth Plan implementation.
The prime minister called for launching a nationwide awareness campaign for the Zarkhez-e Agricultural Loan Programme to improve farmers’ access to financing. He further emphasized transforming Pakistan Agricultural Research Council into a genuine centre of excellence.
Agriculture, according to PM Shehbaz, has immense potential to put Pakistan on the path of sustainable economic growth through quality seeds, modern farming technologies, timely availability of water and fertilizers, value addition of agricultural produce, improved warehousing, and modern storage systems.
The meeting was briefed about ongoing initiatives such as pilot production of multigrain flour by National Agricultural Research Centre. An artificial intelligence-based application to help farmers detect and control crop pests and diseases is also being developed. The National Credit Guarantee Company Limited will provide financial support for easy loans to farmers. Recent approvals include the National Seed Policy, National Agriculture Biotechnology Policy, and Pakistan National Olive Value Chain Policy. Work on a National Wheat Policy and several livestock-related policies is underway.
