Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issues alert for high temperatures in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

According to the official advisory, rapid melting of snow-covered valleys could cause river streams and water channels to remain swollen. Existing glacial lakes may expand due to increased meltwater, while new lakes could also develop in vulnerable mountainous regions.

The alert warns that low-lying areas near riverbeds and downstream locations could face a greater risk of sudden flooding. Authorities highlight the possibility of flash floods, glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) events, and mud and debris flows caused by thawing permafrost and excess water.

Residents and visitors in snow-bound and glaciated valleys have been advised to avoid riverbanks, streams, glacial lakes, and narrow mountain areas. People are urged to stay away from unstable slopes and closely monitor weather updates and official warnings issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department.

Authorities recommend maintaining coordination with Community Based Disaster Risk Management Committees for local guidance and emergency response. Disaster management agencies and relevant departments have been directed to remain alert around the clock and ensure timely public awareness through SMS, social media, and community communication networks.
