PML-N and PPP to Overhaul Pakistan’s Electoral System, Potential Abolition of Caretaker Setups

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) are joining forces to initiate a comprehensive overhaul of Pakistan’s electoral system.

A coordination committee comprising members from both parties has been established to address the deficiencies in the electoral process. Recognizing the need for substantial reforms, the committee has begun drafting legislation aimed at improving the electoral system.

One significant proposal under consideration is the potential abolition of caretaker setups. Instead, the plan suggests allowing the incumbent government to remain in office until new elections are conducted. This proposed model draws inspiration from electoral systems in countries like India and Bangladesh, where the Prime Minister oversees the election process.

As part of the proposed reforms, the Prime Minister would assume direct oversight of general elections. The PML-N and PPP are committed to engaging with other political parties to ensure broader consensus on these reforms.

This collaborative effort reflects a shared commitment to enhancing the transparency and fairness of Pakistan’s electoral process, laying the foundation for a more democratic and inclusive political landscape.
