Pochettino Calls US Co-Hosts to Play Free in Upcoming World Cup

US Soccer Coach Pochettino Urges Team USA to Play with Freedom

Mauricio Pochettino, coach of Team USA, has urged his players to play freely and not fear pressures and expectations that come with co-hosting this summer’s World Cup. The team, alongside Mexico and Canada, boasts a strong lineup including Christian Pulisic from AC Milan and Weston McKennie from Juventus.

Pochettino emphasized the importance of drawing inspiration from American sports like the NFL and basketball, which he enjoyed during his first appointment in 2024. He noted that when athletes are free to perform without pressure, they tend to do better on the field.

Reflecting on his own experience as a player in the 2002 World Cup, Pochettino warned against the negative impact of unmanaged pressure, recalling Argentina’s early exit from the tournament due to poor handling of group stage matches.

The US team is guaranteed home games for all their World Cup fixtures. Their initial two friendlies will be against Belgium and Portugal, both top European teams.

Central defenders Chris Richards and Miles Robinson are out with injuries, joining Tyler Adams and Diego Luna on the sidelines. However, key players Pulisic and McKennie remain fit and expect pressure to be a part of their game.

McKennie told AFP that he doesn’t feel extra pressure, viewing it as an integral part of being a professional soccer player. Pulisic, meanwhile, has deleted social media from his phone to avoid the spotlight, jokingly stating he’s “oblivious” to any added expectations.

Despite these comments, Pochettino remains cautious about predicting outright success but believes in the team’s potential. He told reporters that believing in their chances is key, acknowledging there are too many factors for a definitive outcome.
