Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has unequivocally rejected recent remarks from his fellow MP, Jamil Jivani, regarding Canada’s handling of its ongoing trade dispute with the United States.
In an interview with Breitbart, Jivani characterized Canada’s response to tariffs as a “counterproductive anti-American tantrum,” sparking concerns in Ottawa over Jivani’s credibility and role within parliament. On Tuesday, Poilievre addressed these issues directly, reiterating his party’s stance while expressing skepticism about the MP’s views.
“Canadians are rightfully upset by the unjustified imposition of tariffs,” Poilievre emphasized during a statement on Parliament Hill, as reported by CTV News. “As Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has stated, we cannot control Donald Trump’s actions and reactions.”
Poilievre clarified that Jivani’s comments might seem confusing because “he speaks for himself,” while the party leader represents his own interests. He acknowledged that Jivani’s constituency in Saskatchewan was significantly impacted by the trade disputes.
“To protect Canadian jobs,” Poilievre insisted, “all MPs must leverage their connections and efforts to challenge these tariffs.” The MP further encouraged other parliamentarians to unite against the measures, emphasizing the importance of national unity during such international conflicts.
