Pope Leo XIV Criticizes ‘Idolatry of Self’ in Strongest Iran War Condemnation

Pope Leo XIV delivered a strong condemnation of the war in Iran during a peace vigil at St. Peter’s Basilica on Saturday. The pope criticized “some adults proudly boasting about military actions,” stating it was unacceptable for President Trump to declare that “a whole civilization will die” if the Strait of Hormuz remained closed.

During his speech, Leo emphasized the need to stop idolizing self and money, cease displays of force, and reject war in favor of serving life. He did not directly mention Trump but highlighted the contrast between the actions of some adults and the innocence of children from conflict zones who perceive the horror of war.

Trump posted on Truth Social about the destruction of Iran’s military capabilities, including their entire Navy and Air Force. Leo called for leaders to engage in meaningful negotiations to end conflicts, particularly the U.S.-Israel war with Iran amid a tense two-week ceasefire.

Vice President JD Vance, senior envoy Steve Witkoff, and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner met with Iranian leaders in Pakistan for direct talks on Saturday. Trump warned Iran that non-compliance would lead to large-scale U.S. attacks.

The pope also criticized the war on social media, stating that God does not bless any conflict and that disciples of Christ should never support those who wielded swords or dropped bombs.

Pew Research Center data shows 55% of Catholics voted for Trump in 2024, with White Catholics favoring him over Kamala Harris by a margin of 62% to 37%. The White House spokesperson emphasized that Trump’s foreign policy actions have made the world safer and more prosperous, and his administration has a positive relationship with the Vatican.
