The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) voiced reservations on Friday regarding the fairness of the upcoming general elections, prompting a meeting with Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) officials in Islamabad. The ECP, in response to PTI’s concerns, issued letters to provincial election commissioners, chief secretaries, and the Sindh Inspector General.

In the letters, the ECP emphasized its responsibility to conduct independent and transparent elections, citing Article 220. The electoral watchdog acknowledged receiving complaints regarding the acquisition and submission of nomination papers, with media reports highlighting instances of papers being snatched.

The ECP assured that any significant activities related to the law would be promptly reported.

In a separate development, the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) issued a written verdict on Friday, emphasizing the importance of providing a level playing field for all political parties, including the PTI, to ensure healthy competition. The SC highlighted that maintaining the public’s confidence in the democratic process is contingent upon holding transparent elections.

The court underscored that fair elections not only legitimize the elected government but also reflect the true will of the masses. Emphasizing the significance of transparent elections, the SC stated that the focus should be on a genuine representation of the people’s will rather than forcing elections in the country.
