Punjab officials tight-lipped on Gulfstream aircraft for VIP transport claims

In Lahore, officials remain tight-lipped as reports emerge that the provincial government has acquired a Gulfstream aircraft for its VIP transport role. The move continues to draw criticism amid rising calls for austerity measures in Pakistan.

On Monday, an X account from The Stratcom Bureau, known for sharing defence and security news, claimed that Punjab’s government had purchased a 2019-manufactured Gulfstream GVII-G500 aircraft for its VIP transport needs. According to the post, the aircraft’s registration number is N144S, and it will soon be registered under a Pakistani entity.

The estimated price range for the luxurious plane was set at $38 million to $42 million. Meanwhile, the U.S. FAA registry indicates that the aircraft has been transferred from TVPX Aircraft Solutions Inc., a trust frequently used as an owner for private planes across borders or for privacy reasons.

Flight tracking data show the aircraft flying between Punjab airports since February 12th. Dawn reached out to various officials including Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman, Additional Chief Secretary Ahmad Raza Sarwar, and Additional Secretary Waseem Hamid for a confirmation of the purchase claims; however, they did not respond.

The reported acquisition has sparked controversy. Former Finance Minister Miftah Ismail criticized the move as unfair, comparing it to recent hikes in petroleum prices that have affected Pakistanis’ budgets. He said, “While we are supposed to tighten our belts and sacrifice, Punjab’s VIPs are getting a luxury ride.”

Former Sindh Governor Mohammad Zubair also weighed in, noting the aircraft’s price tag of more than 1,000 crore ($38 million-$42 million). Questioning whether Pakistan could afford such extravagance, he added, “How can this nation, with over 45% of its population living below the poverty line and experiencing record unemployment, justify this expenditure?”

As Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari remains unavailable for comment, the silence surrounding these claims has only fueled speculation. The public outcry underscores a broader debate about how resources are allocated in times of economic hardship.

This story exemplifies an intersection between defense acquisitions, financial transparency, and socio-economic concerns, highlighting Pakistan’s governance challenges and its citizens’ diverse opinions on such controversial decisions.
