Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Ricky Martin continued his concert in Montenegro on Thursday despite tear gas being released near the stage during the performance.
The incident occurred on May 21 during the opening night of the European leg of his Ricky Martin Live tour. The concert was temporarily halted as audience members moved away from the area and received assistance.
Martin, along with his team, immediately left the stage while security personnel and local authorities worked to control the situation.
His publicist, Róndine Alcalá, addressed the matter in a statement shared on Instagram in both Spanish and English. She stated that an individual had discharged tear gas toward the stage which caused panic among the crowd.
During Ricky Martin’s concert tonight in Montenegro – where the artist was kicking off the European leg of his Ricky Martin Live tour – an individual discharged tear gas toward the stage, causing an abrupt interruption of the show as audience members moved away from the area and received assistance.
His publicist said the singer was advised not to continue the performance. However, Martin decided to return once officials confirmed the area was safe. The statement said he resumed the show to “fulfill his commitment to his fans.”
No serious injuries were reported, and Martin and his team were confirmed safe after the incident. Martin is expected to continue the rest of his European tour as planned. His upcoming performances include a UK appearance at the HeritageLive Festival in Norfolk later this year, marking his first UK show in nearly a decade.
