Royal Son Denies High-Level Rape Allegations, Admits Domestic Violence in Shocking Trial Opening

Marius Borg Hoiby, the son of Norway’s crown princess, pleaded not guilty to rape and domestic violence but admitted to some lesser charges during his trial. He faces 38 criminal charges and could face several years in prison if convicted on the most serious allegations.

The case has shaken Norway’s royal family, which is already under significant pressure. A recent poll showed a decline in public support for the monarchy, traditionally one of Europe’s strongest systems.

Hoiby, 29, was tried at Oslo District Court days after his mother publicly apologized for maintaining contact with late United States sex offender Jeffrey Epstein following his 2008 conviction. No special treatment has been promised to Hoiby by prosecutors. His lawyer disputes this, highlighting the extensive press coverage and books written about her client.

The trial is seen as a significant crisis for the royal family in peacetime. Hoiby does not hold a royal title or sit on the line of succession. Despite this, Crown Prince Haakon expressed support for his son, stating they love him despite his alleged actions.

The royal family has faced numerous challenges recently. King Harald, 88 and Europe’s oldest reigning monarch, reduced public duties after receiving medical treatment and a pacemaker. His wife, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, suffers from pulmonary fibrosis that may require a lung transplant. Princess Martha Louise, the king’s daughter, stepped away from royal roles to pursue business ventures with her American husband.

Among Hoiby’s multiple charges are one count of rape involving sexual intercourse and three counts without intercourse, allegedly filmed on his phone. Additional allegations include possession and transportation of 3.5 kilograms of marijuana and an assault against a former partner in January.
