Royal Son Denies Rape Allegations as Trial Begins in Norway

Marius Borg Hoiby, 29, son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marie and stepson to Crown Prince Haakon, faced his first day in court amid a trial that has further tarnished an already embattled royal family. Despite pleading not guilty to the most serious charges of rape and domestic violence, Hoiby admitted some lesser crimes, including speeding, during his brief statement.

During his testimony on Tuesday, Hoiby broke down when discussing his difficult upbringing surrounded by the media from a young age. He cited a need for affirmation and noted past indulgence in parties, alcohol, and possibly drugs. When asked about videos on his phone that were initially suspected of showing rape acts, he vehemently denied that they depicted such incidents, stating that he had never shared them with anyone.

If convicted, Hoiby could face lengthy prison sentences. His trial is scheduled to conclude by March 19, amidst broader challenges for the royal family. These include ongoing scrutiny of Crown Princess Mette-Marie over her connection to late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and a public opinion trend indicating growing support for reducing the monarchy’s role.

The royal family has also been affected by personal crises. King Harald, 88, had recently reduced his public engagements due to health issues, including a hospitalization and pacemaker surgery. His daughter, Crown Princess Martha Louise, relinquished official duties last year to pursue her business ventures more freely. This decision was met with criticism for the couple’s recent participation in a Netflix series chronicling their personal lives.

Despite these challenges, Hoiby’s trial highlights how deeply Norway’s royal family remains under public scrutiny and internal strife.
