Russian attack kills four, injures at least 15 in Kyiv region

A coordinated missile and drone assault targeting the Kyiv region left at least four people dead and over 15 wounded overnight into Saturday, as reported by Mykola Kalashnyk, head of the regional administration. Two critically injured individuals were receiving emergency care. The attack struck four districts, causing significant damage to residential buildings, educational institutions, enterprises, and critical infrastructure.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy characterized the strikes as aimed at “energy infrastructure” in the region, adding that Russia had launched approximately 430 drones and 68 missiles. The Russian Defense Ministry countered on Saturday, stating that the nighttime raids targeted energy facilities serving Ukraine’s armed forces along with military airfields.

This came less than a week after U.S.-led peace talks between Russia and Ukraine were postponed due to tensions in the Middle East. Meanwhile, CBS News sources indicated that Moscow was providing intelligence to Iran regarding American positions during the conflict there. The Kremlin’s information-sharing marked the first known instance of indirect support for an ally, despite previous instances like assisting in the 2024 Syrian ouster and arresting Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro.

As U.S. and Israeli strikes continued against Iran, Russia has defended itself by highlighting its influence over global energy markets, particularly noting the surge in prices, which could divert international attention from Ukraine’s war effort. Zelenskyy emphasized that Western allies must remain vigilant about bolstering air defense capabilities to counter threats from both domestic drone attacks and potential Russian aggression.

On Thursday, Zelenskyy criticized the U.S.’s recent 30-day waiver on sanctions against Russia for oil exports amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East. He argued that such a move would not halt Russia’s invasion but instead provide it with about $10 billion. Additionally, Kyiv awaited approval from Washington for a major agreement on drone production.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian drones struck an oil refinery and port facility in Krasnodar region’s southern territories, injuring three individuals and causing damage to infrastructure. A fire was also sparked by falling debris at an oil refinery, though no casualties resulted. The Russian Defense Ministry reported shooting down 87 Ukrainian drones, including 16 over the Krasnodar area.

These recent developments underscore ongoing geopolitical complexities where Russia seeks to leverage the conflict in the Middle East to mitigate its involvement in Ukraine’s war, a strategy further complicated by the international community’s actions and responses.
