Samsung Confirms Galaxy Z Fold 8 Naming Amid Leaks

Samsung’s upcoming foldable lineup faces further complexity as leaks suggest the company plans to market its standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 as the “Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.” This move contradicts months of speculation about the device’s final branding. The naming decision highlights Samsung’s ongoing struggle to position its foldable against Apple’s rumored “iPhone Ultra,” a wider-format foldable expected to revive a design that largely failed on Android.

Apple’s first foldable series is rumored to feature a wider aspect ratio, similar to Google’s early Pixel Fold and China’s Oppo Find N. However, the form factor didn’t take off on Android due to app compatibility issues, but if Apple releases it, the ecosystem angle could legitimize the concept.

Samsung was expected to respond with a device called the “Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide,” indicating a wider screen. But new leaks suggest Samsung is abandoning this branding entirely. Instead, the standard Z Fold 8 will be labeled as “Ultra,” while the wider version receives its own marketing plan, which appears distinct.

The naming makes sense when considering the hardware: the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 features three rear cameras and a 5,000 mAh battery, justifying the “Ultra” label. However, a wider variant with only two cameras and a 4,800 mAh battery seems less justified for the same branding. Samsung likely concluded that labeling a lower-spec model as Ultra could confuse consumers and undermine the standard device’s positioning.

Yet this decision creates a confusing overlap with the Galaxy S26 Ultra, which offers stronger hardware overall.
