Saudi Arabia Warns of Retaliation Against Iran, Despite Preference for Diplomacy

In a stark shift from earlier diplomatic efforts, Saudi Arabia has warned Tehran that continued attacks on the kingdom could compel Riyadh to permit US military forces to use their bases in retaliation. This comes as tensions escalate amidst ongoing conflicts involving Iran and its adversaries.

The warning was conveyed before President Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran apologized to neighboring Gulf states for Tehran’s actions, four sources familiar with the matter have told Reuters. These statements come after Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan spoke to Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in a direct attempt to outline Riyadh’s position.

Prince Faisal expressed openness to any form of mediation aimed at de-escalation and a negotiated settlement, emphasizing that neither Saudi Arabia nor other Gulf states had ever allowed the use of their airspace or territory for military operations against Iran. However, he also made it clear that if Iranian attacks persisted against Saudi territory or energy infrastructure, Riyadh would be compelled to permit US forces to utilize their bases.

The two countries have maintained regular communication channels through their ambassadors since the US and Israeli military campaign targeting Iran began last week. Neither ministry has provided immediate comment on these recent developments.

While Iran insists on diplomatic solutions, it remains unclear whether this latest threat will temper continued hostilities or push towards a more aggressive response from Saudi Arabia in its staunch opposition to any perceived threats against its national security and energy sector.
