SC seeks updated report on Imran Khan’s prison conditions

In a significant ruling, Pakistan’s Supreme Court ordered an urgent update on the prison conditions of Imran Khan, the controversial founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former Prime Minister. Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan briefed judges on outdated reports from 2023 regarding Khan’s incarceration in Attock Jail.

The court noted these documents were insufficient to reflect current living conditions in Rawalpindi’s Central Jail, prompting the court to mandate a detailed report. Additionally, Barrister Salman Safdar, as amicus curiae, was granted full access to review the facilities and provide findings by February 11, 2026.

While denying an immediate meeting request from senior PTI leader Latif Khosa, the bench emphasized that any directive would require prior notification to the government. The court acknowledged ongoing concerns within the party about restricted visitation rights for Khan’s family, legal team, personal doctors, and associates.

The Supreme Court also scheduled a hearing on 13 petitions related to Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi. These include issues of denied access on specific days, healthcare concerns, and health conditions.

This ruling underscores the ongoing scrutiny by the highest court over Khan’s prison status and highlights the persistent challenges faced by PTI in securing visitation rights for their leader.
