Five individuals were killed in a shooting at a youth welfare facility in Stade, northern Germany, on Monday, according to police. Two arrests were made, including the suspected shooter.

Injuries also occurred but no specific figures were provided by authorities.

The incident took place within the facility south of Stade’s central area, with police stating there was currently no public danger.

Two suspects were apprehended; one is believed to have fired the shots, according to police. They are investigating the background of the incident.

Germany, like much of Western Europe, has stringent gun ownership laws, making mass shootings uncommon but not impossible. Stade’s population is approximately 50,000 and it lies about 25 miles west of Hamburg.
