Silicon Valley Execs Enforce Strict Screen Time Rules for Their Kids

In Silicon Valley, where tech leaders profit from our digital behaviors, some executives find it ironic that they impose surprisingly strict rules at home regarding screen time for their children. Notable examples include Steve Jobs, cofounder of Apple, who banned his family from using iPads. Similarly, Bill Gates abstained entirely from allowing his children to own smartphones until they reached 14.

Evan Spiegel, CEO of Snapchat, has a more lenient approach; he restricts his child’s daily screen time to no more than ninety minutes per week. However, this executive’s stance contrasts with that of Peter Thiel, who imposed similar restrictions on his children at the Aspen Ideas Festival in 2024.

Elon Musk recently reflected on his oversight regarding social media use for his offspring and acknowledged possibly having erred in not imposing stricter limits earlier. Meanwhile, YouTube cofounder Steve Chen is equally concerned about the impact of short-form videos on younger users, cautioning against any extended exposure to this content type that might exacerbate attention span issues.

Adding another layer to these observations, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew indicated his children’s access would be restricted until they reached a certain age and stricter child protection policies were in place. These measures underscore the dual challenges faced by tech executives: reconciling profit-driven company policies with their personal values for their progeny.

While executives at home enforce such guidelines, they continue to witness broader societal concerns regarding excessive screen time. Studies reveal potential negative impacts on mental health and cognition, prompting some nations to enact age restrictions on social media use among teenagers. The spectrum of reactions—from strict parental controls to corporate oversight—mirrors the growing global debate on digital addiction in our increasingly interconnected world.
