Sindh Government Mandates Vehicle Registration at Point of Purchase

The Sindh government has announced a change to vehicle registration laws, eliminating the 60-day grace period previously allowed for vehicle registration. Starting soon, individuals will be required to purchase only registered vehicles.

Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon disclosed the new policy during a press conference on Sunday. “Now, anyone will be able to purchase a vehicle when it is registered. If anyone purchases an unregistered vehicle, they will have to get it registered first,” he said.

This new rule applies to all vehicles, including those imported. Imported vehicles must be registered at the port of entry, and unregistered vehicles cannot be driven on Sindh’s roads. They must be transported through a carrier if moving to another province.

The government plans to enforce this change through an amendment to the Motor Vehicles Ordinance (MVO) of 1965. Previously, vehicle buyers had a 60-day window to register their vehicles. The amendment will be presented in the next cabinet meeting, where it is expected to receive approval before being brought to the assembly for finalization.

Minister Memon emphasized that even locally manufactured vehicles would not be allowed to leave showrooms without registration. Additionally, he noted that the government is considering imposing a substantial penalty of Rs1 million for violations of this law.
