Sindh’s Government Proposes Expanding Mayor’s Term Until Next Elections
The Sindh government has unveiled plans to overhaul its Local Government Act, aiming to extend the term of mayors until the next scheduled local elections. A special committee is currently working on these proposed changes and anticipates completion by the end of this month.
Under the new amendments, the mayor would continue in office for a full four-year term until the subsequent local election period. Currently, the law mandates that mayors must vacate their positions after completing four years. The revised proposal aims to keep mayoral offices active longer, facilitating continuity and stability in governance during transitional periods.
Additionally, proposals include the dissolution of existing town councils upon reaching their four-year tenure. There are also discussions regarding enhancements to the Deputy Mayor’s role and increased responsibilities for Vice Chairpersons. Furthermore, recommendations have been made concerning a potential review of direct funding and administrative powers for local town councils, as well as a restructuring of the governance hierarchy within Karachi.
The special committee is actively engaging with various stakeholders to finalize these recommended changes in anticipation of their approval by the end of the month. These amendments seek to streamline local governance structures while ensuring continued effectiveness and responsiveness during elections cycles.
