Sonia, a female elephant at Karachi Safari Park, was found dead on Sunday morning, park officials confirmed. The unexpected death has prompted an investigation, with the enclosure cordoned off and media access restricted.

The cause of death remains unknown and will be determined after a post-mortem examination, according to Amjad Zidi, Director of Karachi Safari Park. Sonia was among four elephants brought to Pakistan from Tanzania in 2009.

This marks the third elephant death at the park. Noor Jehan, another elephant, passed away in March 2023 due to illness. Malika, who was also part of the original group, and Madhubala, recently transferred from Karachi Zoo, are the remaining elephants at the Safari Park.

Further updates on Sonia’s death are expected once the autopsy results are available.
