South Africa amassed 213-4 off 50 overs, setting up a formidable challenge for their opponents with a total that has already become a standout score of this year’s tournament. David Miller’s unbeaten innings of 39 in just 23 balls was particularly noteworthy, as he shared a partnership of 75 runs with Tristan Stubbs in only six and half overs before the final over.
While Canada managed to register 156-8 despite their best efforts, Navneet Dhaliwal’s brief resistance did little to stem the tide. The only batsman who managed any substantial innings was Dhaliwal himself, hitting a brisk 64 off his 27 deliveries but succumbing in the final over.
Lungi Ngidi played a pivotal role for South Africa, delivering 4-31 across four overs and earning player of the match honors. He described the evening dew as beneficial, noting how fuller deliveries had a tendency to “slide on,” with slower balls still managing to deceive batters.
“Once we varied our pace better, it started to have an impact,” Ngidi explained. “Variations always catch people out.”
Quinton de Kock and captain Aiden Markram got the South African innings off to a brisk start, combining for an opening partnership of 70 runs over six and half overs before both fell successively. De Kock departed with his score at 25 after facing Dilpreet Bajwa’s elusive off-spinner, while Markram ended on a score of 59, having gone long when he was caught in the deep.
Left-arm wrist-spinner Ansh Patel also had a standout game for South Africa, finishing with figures of 3-31 and removing Ryan Rickelton (33) and Dewald Brevis (six). Before Miller and Stubbs took control, South Africa’s scoreplate stood at 125-1 before breaching the century mark.
The partnership between Miller and Stubbs propelled South Africa to their final total of 213 runs in just 47 deliveries. Miller’s 39 was a key part of this run chase, coupled with Stubbs’ resilient 34 off only 19 deliveries. The duo’s performance secured victory for South Africa, who maintained an invigorating start and solid defense throughout the match.
