US-Iran Talks in Pakistan Amid Deep Divisions, Trump’s Basis Proposal

US and Iran to Hold Peace Talks in Pakistan

The United States and Iran are set to hold peace talks in Pakistan, which has been mediating between the two nations. Despite President Donald Trump’s statement that proposals from Tehran form a “basis” for talks, both sides remain deeply divided on key issues.

Iran’s 10-point proposal shows little overlap with Washington’s previous 15-point plan, suggesting major gaps to bridge. For instance, Iran demands uranium enrichment, which Washington previously ruled out as non-negotiable. The 10 points also do not address Iran’s missile capabilities, a concern shared by Israel and the U.S.

A Pakistani official said Iran could secure many of its demands, focusing on reconstruction, reparations, and sanctions relief. However, it is unlikely to agree to uranium enrichment or other concessions that undermine its security interests.

The fate of the Strait of Hormuz has overshadowed previous talks, with Iran’s closure of the waterway since February 28 causing global energy prices to soar. Tehran has indicated it would charge for ships transiting the strait under a peace deal.

Trump threatened to devastate Iran if it did not agree to a ceasefire and reopen the strait. Israel struck Lebanon in a parallel conflict, further complicating the situation. The US and Israel say the ceasefire does not cover hostilities in Lebanon, while Iran insists on halting military action as part of any agreement.

The lack of progress on these issues suggests both sides are unwilling to make major concessions, with Iran likely to continue fighting despite superior firepower from its enemies.
