SSGC Ensures Uninterrupted Ramadan Gas Supply Amid Regional Tensions

Amid mounting regional tensions and the reported closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Pakistan’s energy sector faces renewed pressure following a halt in liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies from Qatar. Sources within Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) said that the utility has so far managed to maintain stability in gas supplies during Ramadan. Sources acknowledged that the broader gas situation requires “significant adjustment” in light of the regional developments and the suspension of LNG imports. However, they emphasized that the company has taken proactive measures to ensure uninterrupted supply, particularly during peak consumption hours at Sehr and Iftar.

SSGC has successfully managed gas supplies during Ramadan so far,” sources said. “We will continue to ensure gas availability during Sehr and Iftar, as well as other times, depending upon linepack.”

Linepack—the volume of gas stored within the transmission and distribution pipelines—has emerged as a key operational tool for balancing supply and demand. By carefully managing pipeline pressure and reserves, SSGC aims to cushion short-term fluctuations and maintain steady delivery to households.

Earlier in the day, several areas of Karachi experienced low gas pressure, raising concerns among residents during meal preparation hours. According to sources the issue was temporary. “After 4 p.m., gas pressure stabilized across affected areas,” they said, adding that technical teams were deployed to address the imbalance swiftly.

Sources within SSGC also indicated that contingency planning remains in place. If necessary, SSGC may revise its Ramadan supply schedule to safeguard consumers’ needs during critical hours. “Adjustments can be made to ensure that the Sehr and Iftar timings of citizens are not disturbed,”.

Energy analysts note that Pakistan’s reliance on imported LNG makes it vulnerable to geopolitical disruptions, particularly in strategic maritime corridors such as the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy shipments. For now, sources said close monitoring, operational flexibility, and prudent linepack management will be central to navigating the ongoing supply uncertainty while meeting heightened Ramadan demand in Karachi and surrounding regions.
