Taiwan’s 12 Allies Face Diplomatic Strain Amid China Tensions

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te visited Eswatini on a surprise trip after his government blamed Chinese pressure for the cancellation of an earlier visit. China views democratically governed Taiwan as part of its territory with no right to state-to-state ties, a position strongly disputed by Taiwan’s government.

Over the years, China has gradually reduced the number of countries maintaining formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Currently, these states include:

PACIFIC: Marshall Islands, Palau, Tuvalu.
AFRICA: Eswatini.
EUROPE: Vatican City.
