Tarar: IWT Unilateral Revocation Not Possible; Experts Seminar Planned

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated that Pakistan cannot unilaterally revoke the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). The country is set to present legal and technical aspects of the treaty at a seminar in Islamabad on Tuesday. Water security is crucial for Pakistan, which retains rights over contractually bound waterways shared with India.

The IWT, signed in 1960, has been used to manage the Indus River system amicably between both nations. Last year, India suspended the treaty following an attack in Pahalgam. Tarar emphasized that the World Bank-brokered treaty includes a framework for resolving issues during a press conference with Minister for Climate Change Dr Musadik Malik.

Malik highlighted that international forums have raised concerns about unilateral suspension and noted that Pakistan’s position was upheld by International Arbitration Courts.
