A new study published in Health Psychology reveals that aggressive behavior during teenage years can lead to accelerated biological aging by midlife. According to Joseph Allem, a professor of psychology at Harvard University, “Adolescents are often ridiculed for treating their relationships as if they were matters of life and death.”
Researchers from the study posited that persistent conflict initiated in adolescence may contribute significantly to accelerated aging, which can increase an individual’s risk over a lifetime of developing health issues such as heart disease or diabetes. The research team followed participants from age 13 into adulthood, collecting reports on aggression, familial conflicts, and peer disputes.
Two validated methods were employed by the researchers to gauge biological age compared to actual age: one method measured blood pressure, inflammation, blood sugar, cholesterol levels, and immune function; the other included multiple factors like these. Both methods indicated that higher levels of aggression during early adolescence predicted a more advanced biological age by 30 years.
Boys were found to experience more conflicts with their fathers, while teens from lower-income families were more likely to act out against their peers. The study also highlighted how gender and family income influenced the manifestation of these aggressive behaviors.
Joseph Allem emphasized that while this research does not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship between teenage aggression and accelerated aging, other factors beyond those studied could be contributing. “It’s important to note,” he added, “that what really matters is how early behaviors translate into later relationship problems.”
Nonetheless, the findings of this study underscore the potential long-term health consequences stemming from social challenges during early adolescence.
The research underscores the significance of understanding and addressing these early social issues as critical for preventing potentially harmful outcomes in adulthood.
