Tesla Caps AI Tool Spending at $200 Weekly for Employees

Tesla employees will no longer be allowed to spend more than $200 a week on AI tools starting July 6. This change comes from an internal memo reported by The Information, marking a significant shift from Tesla’s previous policy of encouraging staff to use AI extensively.

Over the past six months, Tesla has mandated that all its AI usage be integrated into an approved platform called Bottle Rocket. Models from OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and Cursor became available for workers under this initiative.

However, developers were racking up bills worth thousands per week, prompting the $200 limit. This does not apply to beta versions of xAI software products or those from Musk’s separate AI enterprise, ensuring power users flock to Grok and Cursor’s Composer platform over competitors.

Despite Musk urging employees to favor technologies linked to his other ventures, such as SpaceX’s acquisition of Anysphere for $60 billion, Grok remains unpopular among engineers who prefer Anthropic’s Claude. This policy change highlights the challenges Tesla faces in managing AI tool usage costs while promoting innovation.
