Toronto Rock clinched their first NLL championship in 15 years with a 12-7 win over Halifax Thunderbirds at Scotiabank Centre. The Rock also triumphed in Friday’s opener, 13-11.
Owen Hiltz and Chris Boushy each scored three goals and added an assist for the Rock. Mark Matthews contributed a goal and three assists. Nick Rose made 34 saves in the title-clinching win.
Sam English, Hugh Kelleher, Lucas Hugal, C.J. Kirst, and Latrell Harris also found the net for Toronto, which led 8-6 at halftime before extending their lead in the second half.
Halifax was spearheaded by Clarke Petterson, who scored three goals and added an assist. Mike Robinson, Randy Staats, Cody Jamieson, and Brendan Bomberry also scored for the Thunderbirds. Warren Hill stopped 40 shots.
This victory marks Toronto’s seventh NLL title overall and their first since defeating Washington Stealth in 2011. It ends Buffalo Bandits’ recent dominance having won the previous three championships.
