Italy’s Defence Minister Emphasizes Importance of Strong Transatlantic Ties
On Monday, Italy’s Defense Minister Guido Crosetto underscored the significance of maintaining robust transatlantic relations following President Donald Trump’s recent remarks about Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Trump had previously accused Meloni of fabricating a story after telling an Italian TV channel that she had “begged” him to take a photo at a G7 summit in France last month.
As the two leaders prepare for a NATO summit in Turkey this week, Trump sparked further controversy by posting a picture of Meloni on Truth Social with the caption “RESTRAINING ORDER NEEDED.”
Crosetto told Sky TV that he did not respond to Trump’s post but emphasized the importance of maintaining relations with key allies like the United States.
Opposition politicians were more critical, with Carlo Calenda calling Trump a “despicable, cheap bully” and expressing support for Meloni.
